Chinthurst Hill, Wonersh and Bramley
A small, local nature reserve on the outskirts of Guildford, Chinthurst Hill is a quiet gem in the Surrey Hills.
It has a stone folly from nearly 100 years ago, and a natural playground for kids to enjoy at the car park, with plenty of picnic benches on offer.
If you’re looking to escape the bustle of Guildford and take in some scenic views of the Surrey Hills and surrounding villages, this walk is for you.

The route
With Bramely Business car park behind you, cross the road and turn left down Station Road. You will cross over The Wey and Arun Canal and head right round the bend and carrying on walking up the road.
Cross over the road and head through the kissing gate on the left. You will see the fields of Chinthurst Hill and Manor.
Go straight through the next kissing gate and enjoy more fields. You will pass through houses and reach the main road.
Cross the road and carrying on walking along the pavement. You will cross Blackheath Lane Road and head right onto the footpath by Tangley Apartments.
Stay on the foothpath until Great Tangley Road, cross and head back into the woodland until the path takes you to the main road (B2128).
Cross the road and you will see a public footpath sign almost diagonally to the right.
Follow the path and it will take you to the ascent of Chinthurst Hill.
(Climb the wooden steps, turn right, and head left by the sign through the gate and follow the footpath up to the tower).
Enjoy the view of the Surrey Hills at the top (Hopefully it’s a lovely day!)
Take the same route down and head left at the footpath before the car park.
Follow the path and take the left through the gate. Carry on and you will pass an equestrian centre on your left.
At Chinthurst Road head straight onto Tannery Lane. Take the footpath on your left, head over the bridge, turn left and follow the Downs Link all the way back to the car park.
Things we love about this walk:
The challenging ascent! Yes I know but sometimes it’s great to feel your legs on fire
We’ve been many times and it’s always been quiet, a great place to have a picnic
The view at the top is very impressive
Free parking
Things we wish were better:
Quite a lot of walking on pavements (fairly narrow pavements in Wonersh)
A pub and small shop enroute but otherwise not a lot of facilities
I have carried both my toddler and baby together around this walk, and the ascent was challenging to say the least. It can be done, but it’s not easy. Make sure you have a good rest at the top!
